Rockys Backyard Ultra returns to McLaren Falls in Tauranga on 6 December 2025.

A backyard ultra is a unique ultramarathon format where runners must complete a 6.71km loop every hour, on the hour, until one runner remains. The catch? Finish each loop within the hour - or you're out. Whether chasing a personal best, looking to push your limits, or just keen to experience the magic of a few loops, this event has something for everyone.

The course winds through stunning trails alongside Lake McLaren, featuring waterfalls, native bush, and - if you make it far enough - glowworms lighting your way into the night. With 140+ metres of elevation per loop, Rockys is a physical and mental challenge set in one of the Bay’s most beautiful spots.

This is a self-supported event, so bring whatever you need to keep going. There will be freebies, snacks, electrolytes, and water stations thanks to event sponsors - so you won’t be completely on your own.
