The Sandy Point Backyard Ultra starting on 10 January 2026 is a new last one standing endurance race in Invercargill, Southland.
A Backyard Ultra (BYU) is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run a 6.7km course in less than one hour, every hour. When each lap is completed, the remaining time within the hour is used to recover and replenish for the next hour's race. The race finishes when one person completes one more lap than anyone else.
The course is undulating, cross country terrain where BYU runners will definitely enjoy the background sound of waves at Oreti beach.
